There are few certainties in this life.  Death, taxes, and Serena Williams advancing past the opening round of Grand Slam events.  Yesterday, the three certainties in life were diminished to two, when  the unthinkable happened.  In an upset bordering the level of Buster Douglas over Mike Tyson, little-known Virginie Razzano turned the tennis world upside down.  Down a set and 5-1 in the second set tiebreaker, it appeared the most dominant female tennis player of our generation would move to 47 and 0 in the first round of Grand Slam events.  A streak dating back to her Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open in January of 1998.  Think again.

Times have changed

All day I have been absolutely perplexed by what occurred at the All England Club.  In all honesty I have been beside myself.  The great Roger Federer was ahead two sets to zero on a solid, but not great, Jo-Wilfried Songa.  This was the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.  Plus Roger was not going up against his arch nemesis Rafael Nadal.  Put this match in the books right?

Great actors to the Boxing Hall of Fame

Tomorrow, the Boxing Hall of Fame will welcome its hotly anticipated 2011 class.  And for those of you who are not the biggest boxing fans (most of this generation are not), at least you will have heard of two of the inductees.  These two men are entirely different ambassadors of the sport.  Yet they both share one common trait.

They are both great actors.

One of the inductees is Sylvester “Sly” Stallone.  His Rocky movies are widely considered to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, movie saga of all time.  Whether you are a Stallone fan or not, you have to admit that the Rocky movies have a small place in your heart.  The song “Gonna Fly Now,” also widely known as the “Rocky Song” is a tune familiar to all Americans.  In addition, how many movies have an actual statue that still resides where the movie took place?  This statue is a landmark that tourists always make an effort to see.  Lastly, the 72 stone steps that sit outside of the Philadelphia Art Museum will forever be known as the “Rocky Steps.”  No matter what time of year or what day you go to the city of Brotherly Love, you will always watch people run up the “Rocky Steps” and do an impersonation of the famous scene from the movies.  These people could 3-years-old, or they could be 80-years-old, they will still run up those stairs and pretend that they are Rocky.
