“Mavs Get Stronger”

Corey Brewer (pictured above) won 2 National Championship while at Florida. Now he finally has the chance to play on a winner in the NBA.

It would be easy to write about the ongoing saga that is the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement tussle.  But I am not going to.  In all honesty, it is pretty boring and depressing all at the same time.  We want football.  It is as simple as that.  I pray that we will be watching the NFL come Sunday in early September.

In other news, one of the West’s elite teams got stronger today.  Not that they really needed any help.  But the Mavericks made a quite, yet major pick up in my eyes.  This is a move that could really help them down the stretch.  Currently, Dallas has won 9 of their last 10 games.  They currently hold the 2nd seed in the Western Conference.  Plus Mark Cuban has remained out of the tabloids of late.  Things look to be going pretty well in Dallas.

Well today, things just got better.  One of the keys to being an elite team in the NBA that really kind of takes a back seat sometimes is having a defensive stopper.  Look at the top-tier teams in the League right now.  The Celtics, the Heat, the Bulls, the Spurs, the Lakers, and the Magic.  Want to know something that they all have in common?

They have at least one great defender and very solid overall team defense.  Plus all of these elite squads possess great length at every position.  The Mavericks, normally perceived as an offensive juggernaut currently have the 8th rated defense in the League in points allowed per game.  Well now they have a proven defensive stopper, who has great length in Corey Brewer to add to the mix.

The Mavericks were in need of a guy that they could use to slow down stars like Kobe Bryant, Manu Ginobli, and Kevin Durant come playoff time.  Brewer is a very smooth, 6 9 defensive presence, who also has the ability to score.  Now I am not saying that this will be a match made in heaven.  Or that it will be a move that ensures Dallas of a title.  But this is the type of move where Dallas just became a tougher team, and they gave up nothing in return.

Beware San Antonio and LA.  Dallas finally has added a defensive stopper and now has the ability to slow down your stars Manu Ginobli and Kobe Bryant.

The Mavericks are rolling and I would not be surprised to see them end up as the 1 seed in the West when it is all said and done.  It would take a massive meltdown from San Antonio for this to happen though.

Lastly, I am very happy for Corey.  A proven winner in college at Florida, now has a chance to be part of a winning team again.  It is always nice to see guys who handle business both on and off the court head to a winning franchise.

Stay tuned for the next edition of TheSportsKraze.

  1. Call me a cynic, but until they prove me wrong, I look at the Dallas Mavericks as the NBA’s version of the Minnesota Vikings – a team that always seems to have a ton of talent of consistently finds ways to blow it in the end.
