“A Return to Prominence”

The Dallas Mavericks are rolling.  And I mean really rolling.  They are currently in the midst of a 12 game winning streak and do not look to be stopping any time soon.  Dallas currently sits at 44 and 21 and holds a 6 game lead over the always tough to beat come playoff time San Antonio Spurs.  You got to say hats off to the Dallas owner Mark Cuban.

Many show disdain for the guy because he always is ready to talk after every game and is not afraid to speak his mind.  Whether he speaks his mind or not, he made a beautiful trade this season that really has the Mavs on the cusp of making a return trip to the Finals.  The difference though between this team and the one from 4 years ago…

These guys are more determined, tougher, and hungrier to get to the top of the West.  The Lake Show better step it up fast, because the Maverick train looks poised to play into June.  Dirk Nowitzki is putting together an MVP type season.  Jason Kidd is dishing dimes like the all-star of old, not to mention he has refound his 3 point stroke.  Shawn Marion looked amazing last night putting up 29 points and 14 rebounds.  And these are all guys that the Mavericks already had.

A little bit before the break the Mavericks got rid of Josh Howard and Drew Gooden.  They picked up the always feisty Caron Butler and the big boy Brendan Haywood.  This has turned into a phenomenal pick up and possibly the best move of Mark Cuban’s career as an owner, or at least in recent memory.  Both of these guys bring a toughness and a determination that this team was really missing.  It seems like ever since they have arrived, a fire has been lit under this team and its shows in the wins and loss column.

Haywood finally gives the Mavs some depth at the center position.  Erick Dampier now can rest a little and heal up for the stretch run.  Caron Butler adds another explosive playmaker with some defensive swagger.  Not to mention Butler has gotten over his Mountain Dew obsession and straw chewing habit.  There isn’t much else that can hold this playmaker out of UConn back.

Next up for the Mavericks are home battles against the lowly Nets, the can’t wait for summer Knicks, and the Derrick Rose led Bulls.  The Mavs likely could be heading into their showdown with Boston on a 15 game win streak..

Can the Mavericks make a run to the Finals?

Stay tuned for the next edition of Sportskraze.
