“Weekend of the Stars”

This weekend was a big one for some of the best in brightest in the world of sports.  In football, there was the Senior Bowl, as some of the best College Football has to offer battled it out on the gridiron.  Yet another precursor to the upcoming draft in April.  Mardy Gilyard continued to wow NFL scouts, and Tim Tebow’s stock continued to plummet.  It will be very interesting to see where some of these guys end up.

Serena Williams then flexed her muscles down under and secured the ladies Australian Open crown for her 5th Aussie Open title and 12th singles Grand Slam title overall.  Not to mention Serena and her sister Venus won the doubles title.  Serena played outstanding all tournament long and continues to amaze me with her sustained high level of play.  It was also very refreshing to see Justine Henin back and at the forefront of the game.  She adds excitement and another star to the sport.

Soon thereafter, the great one himself, Roger Federer, took down the great British hope to win his 16th Grand Slam title.  Roger played amazing all tournament and never really was in danger.  Roger really cut down on the errors this tournament and exhibited great confidence.  Though it may be hard to believe, he may be playing as good or better than he was last year.  This is bad news for the rest of the men on the tour.

Next, Kobe Bryant, on a somewhat quite day for the superstar, led the Lakers to a road victory over the struggling Celtics.  Bynum came up big for the Lakers.  The Celtics really need to string together some victories as they continue to struggle.  I do think that they will be able to get back on track in the near future and compete to represent the East in the Finals.  They do need to be careful though and make sure that they do not fall too far behind as the Cavs, Magic, and Hawks all are playing great basketball.

Then finally the weekend is being capped off in Miami with the NFL Pro Bowl.  Though this game has become a very lackluster event, it is always fun watching some of the NFL superstars team up against one another.  It is a shame though that they are having it before the Super Bowl and missing out on having the players from the top two teams participate in the game.

So it has truly been a weekend of the stars.  Both Serena and Roger are both still able to capture a year-long Grand Slam as leg one of the 4 is complete.  Kobe and the Lakeshow still can win the big one even with their very up and down play of late.  And the Super Bowl is just a week away.

So what was your favorite star moment of the weekend?  Do you think Roger or Serena could capture all 4 Grand Slams this year?

Stay tuned for the next edition of Sportskraze.

  1. I think it’s definitely possible that they could both get all 4. In my mind, the only ones standing in their way are Henin and Nadal.

  2. Money,
It is definitely a possibility for either one of them to pull it off. From the way that they played Down Under, I would give Federer a better chance.

I feel that the men’s tour is much stronger and more competitive than the women’s one, but Nadal has been struggling with injuries for the better part of a year now, and Henin is just coming back. Her game will continue to improve and get back to the level where it was at not to long ago.

Though I think it is a long shot for either of them, I would say that R Fed has the better chance.
