“What a Joke”

So according to most sources, the much-anticipated super fight between Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is off.  This fight would have been the largest grossing fight in boxing history and made both fighters 2 of the richest men in the world.  The whole debate is stemming from how the drug testing is to be administered.

Lets save the mumbo jumbo on this one.  This whole situation is just another reason professional boxing today is a sham.  How many avid sports fans can name the current Heavyweight Champion of the world? If you were wondering, there are currently three of them.  The Klitscho bros and David Haye.  There was a time when the Heavyweight Champion of the world was one of the most recognized and distinguishable sports figures in the world.  Also, if this fight were to happen, how many of you would be willing to put up the bucks to watch it on paperview?  Better get a group together to have a party to watch this one.  There was also a time when big time fights used to be shown on regular cable.  Imagine that!

The sport has really gone off the deep end.  There are way too many titles.  There are far too many weight divisions.  Not enough fights are shown on generic television.  And frankly, it is just extremely difficult to follow.  The last major event that I really can vividly remember is the image of Mike Tyson biting at Evander Holyfield’s ear.   That was almost 15 years ago.  Where has the last decade gone for this sport?

Boxing has truly become all about the money.  Any integrity that the sport ever had, has all but vanished.  So this whole recent debate that is going on between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank.  Is it real?  In my opinion no.  I feel that the entire debate that is going on now is staged, and a way to stall and add some extra hoopla to the fight.  People will do anything to make an extra buck right?  This fight will happen.  There is too much money involved for it not to occur.  It is just a matter of when.

So what are your thoughts on the sport of boxing today?  Can the sport be saved?  And finally, will this fight occur?

“Help D Wade”

Last evening the Miami Heat lost in thrilling overtime fashion to the current top team in the East, the Boston Celtics.  This was a game that the Heat had every opportunity to win.  Dwayne Wade put on an amazing exhibition and demonstrated why he is one of the elite players in the game.  He scored 44 points, had 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals..and the Heat lost!

It is amazing when Wade can put on a Superman like performance, and still not get the W.  Wade, being the consummate team player he is would surely give up all the stats to get another title.  He loves to win.  Last night though, Mario Chalmers failed to guard Rajon Rondo on the last play of regulation giving the up and coming Celtic a tip in as time expired.  How often does a team score when down with 0.6 seconds left in regulation?  Even with teams being able to take the ball out at half court in the NBA after a timeout, teams rarely ever score when all they have is less than a second remaining.

Now the Heat are not a horrible team.  Players like Beasley, Chalmers, and Haslem are all up and coming.  In my eyes though, Beasley is the only one of the three with All Star potential.  But how long is Wade willing to wait before the Heat put a formidable supporting cast around him so he can win another title?  Either the Heat pick up a Chris Bosh this offseason, or D Wade should walk to a contender.  Now obviously big dollars will be thrown  in Wade’s direction.  But I see him seeking out a contender or at least a team that will put a contender around him in the very near future.

Just another amazing effort that results in a loss.  In the meantime, continue to play at an amazingly high level on a team that has no prayer of making it out of the East.  Also take note that the Celtics played last night without Kevin Garnett.  When the Celtics get healthy, watch out East.

So what will D Wade end up doing this offseason?  Will he stay or go?
